Dec 21-22

The Great Buddha in  Kamakura, cast in 1242, weighs 121 tons.  Quite impressive, and still sits in the middle of manicured landscaping. Still active, worshipers bowed and expressed their reverence as the incense smoked away. Hundreds of people milled about taking cell phone pictures..

Nearby, we met the step son's in-laws for an elegant lunch. The restaurant looked like an Edo period inn. Wait staff, ladies dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, brought plate after plate  of delicious and elegant traditional food.

Afterwards, we went for a long walk around the beach. For such a northern latitude, it was astounding to see so many young men in the water wind surfing. They all had wet suits, but it was still cold.
